So what exactly is auctionReminder?
auctionReminder is a fast, easy and free tool that lets you add reminders about eBay auctions to your Google Calendar.
What do I need to use auctionReminder?
To use auctionReminder you must have a modern browser, with Javascript enabled. Of course, you also need a Google Calendar!
Why auctionReminder? Doesn't eBay already have the My eBay watchlists?
True, but eBay only lets you control what notifications you receive, not when you receive them. Also, using Google Calendar means you can add eBay auctions into your daily agendas, embed calendars with your auctions on webpages, share auctions with fellow bargain hunters, and even import auction end times into applications such as Microsoft Outlook. OK, I have found an auction I'm interested in. What now?
Before you go to auctionReminder, you need to copy either the item's URL (web address), or it's eBay item number (located at the right-hand side of the blue bar with the item title). Do this by highlighting the URL/item number with your mouse, right-clicking, and selecting "copy" from the menu. Power-tip: You can do this quickly in most browsers by pressing Alt+D to select the address bar, followed by Ctrl+C to copy.
Next, point your browser to either the auctionReminder home page, or directly to the Google Calendar application. (Power-tip: bookmarks/favourites are your friend!)
I've arrived at auctionRemind, and it's asking me to choose my eBay website, but I use eBay Guatemala!
Sorry, only the countries shown are supported at this time.
Now, there's a form on screen asking for the eBay URL or item number. So I just paste in the information I selected earlier, and click submit?
Exactly. On most browsers, hitting Ctrl-V will paste in what you copied a lot faster than using the mouse. And you can simply hit return instead of clicking submit.
Now it's telling me I need to go to Google!
Yes, the first time you use auctionReminder, you will be directed to a Google page to log-in. Obviously, Google doesn't let anyone access your account, including auctionReminder, so you need to explicitly authorise auctionReminder to access your calendar. auctionReminder will not be able to access any other Google services you use (GMail etc). Google will then automatically send you back to auctionReminder, and give us a special permission to access your calendar. You can revoke this permission at any time - just go to Google Accounts.
I only have to do this once?
Yes, unless you go to Google accounts and revoke our access.
How do I know I've picked the correct auction?
The auction description will appear in bold near the top of the screen. Wrong one? Just hit "Start Over".
I've arrived at a big form with lots of options what do they all mean?
The first option you see is the reminder time option. Use this to choose how long before an auction ends you should be reminded. There are also options to add an entry without a reminder, or to use the default settings for your calendar. Next, you can choose yout reminder type. If you have selected "No reminder" or "Use my defaults" then this box has no effect. Otherwise, you can choose between email, pop-ups, or your calendar's default settings. If you have more than one calendar set-up, the next option is to select which calendar to add the reminder to.
The next option talks about web content. What on earth is that?
When an auction event is added, it can only be plain text and cannot include links. Now the problem with that is, if you're interested in an item, you want to be able to find it again! As a solution, auctionReminder uses Google Calendar's Web Content feature. Whenever you add an auction, auctionReminder will place a small icon at the top of the calendar for that day. This menu lets you choose what pops up when you click that icon: either the eBay auction page (see example) or an auctionReminder quick summary page (see example).
I want to set the reminder for a different time from the options on the list. Can I do that?
Not at the moment. Google Calendar only allows applications to set reminders for specific times. auctionReminder supports all the possible times that Google Calendar supports. If an option does not appear on this list, it is because the auction ends before that option (so when adding an entry for an auction ending in 2 hours, a reminder of 1 week before will not be available.
What happens next?
Click "proceed", and the entry will be added to your calendar. If you already have your calendar open in another window or tab, you may need to reload it to see the entry added.
Why can't I pick SMS as a reminder option?
This reminder option is not widely available, so is not yet supported. However, it will work if you select it as the default method in your calendar, and then choose "Use my calendar's default settings" on auctionReminder's form.
Do you support other calendar systems like 30 Boxes?
No...or perhaps I should say, not yet.
It does require a fair bit of copying and pasting though, doesn't it? I'm a power user, and I demand a bookmarklet...
Well, since you ask... auctionRemind This!
Can I contact you?
Sure. My details are on the Contact page. Any suggestions are welcome too, but play nice - my to do list is already massive!
Was this more questions than you were anticipating when you started writing this page?
